What Is Drupal?

Drupal is an open-source content management system (CMS) – a system for building and running websites – that makes it easy to edit your website, but still includes virtually unlimited functionality and flexibility. It’s in the top three CMSs used today and is used on sites like weather.com, whitehouse.gov, dallascowboys.com, puma.com and teslamotors.com. Drupal is also Balcom’s preferred CMS.

  • Customizable. Out-of-the-box Drupal is pretty barebones and does require a decent amount of customization. Fortunately, this is easy to do with modules that are contributed by its open-source community. These modules are generally free to use, and offer a wide range of functionality – from contact forms to interactive maps and beyond. This allows for amazing flexibility and diversity in sites that run Drupal, no matter the size.
  • Scalable. Aka “future proof.” Drupal is easier to expand in case you want to grow your website later. So, for instance, if you can only invest in a basic site now, but know you want to add tons of content and cool features later (even if you don’t know exactly what those features are), Drupal makes it easy.
  • Robust. Without getting too technical, Drupal is able to handle large sites very well. It doesn’t matter how much content you create – Drupal will show it all without slowing down. It also keeps your content organized and easy to access. Even if your site is on the smaller side, you still get all these great features.

  • Secure. A security team watches over Drupal and many of its modules to keep it all safe and secure. This team makes sure that as threats evolve, so does Drupal, and nothing slips through the cracks. It does mean that Drupal will need updates on a semiregular basis. Balcom can handle these for you, leaving you more time to focus on other aspects of your site (like content).

Once a few modules have been installed, the sky is the limit, both in functionality and size of your Drupal site. Though we’re also happy to build WordPress sites when our clients prefer, Drupal is our favorite CMS for its ability to handle large sites as well as small sites. Your site will be easy to use from day one and will grow with your business and its needs.
