"We need more website traffic." If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, I'd be living on a beach somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. (Well, maybe if I had a dollar for every time I heard it.)
Of course you want more website traffic. Who doesn't? But you also need the right kind of traffic. People primed to do something – buy, sign up, join, donate, learn more, etc. Here's the bad news. There's no magic bullet that will make it happen. There's not even an I Dream of Genie head bob. Sorry.
Instead, driving a steady stream of the right people to your site involves an arsenal of things -- everything from search engine optimization (SEO), online advertising, email marketing and Facebook ads, to traditional advertising, content marketing, public relations and social media. Even how your site is built makes a difference.
I know, I know, it sounds expensive. And time consuming. The good news is that smart planning up front will save you boatloads of time and money. (Money you can use to beat me to that beach in the Pacific Ocean.) Ultimately, when you're trying to drive more traffic to your website, it's not how much you spend, it's how you spend it.
