Luckenbach, Texas
Lots of small towns in Texas are the same. Come to think of it, small towns might be the same everywhere. Main Street cuts the town in half. Downtown is littered with a handful of mom and pop shops that look so quaint, you find yourself wanting to go inside, even though you have absolutely no interest in their product.
Luckenbach is not that town.Maybe you're a fan of country music. Heck, maybe you're not. Either way – if you've heard the song, maybe even just playing overhead in a bar, you'd know that "Out in Luckenbach, Texas, ain't nobody feeling no pain."
Luckenback is about ten miles south east of Fredericksburg. It possibly stretches beyond the one loop of road that is home to the dancehall, snack shack and general store, but if it does – nobody probably realizes it (myself included).
I've heard about it for years. (I know the song, you see...) Over the long weekend, we passed through Fredericksburg, past the small shops and tourists, past the patios full of lunchtime crowds, off of 290 and onto a tiny ranch road that wound its way through gravel parking lots and around huge trees.
Nobody ever tells you that there are exactly three buildings in Luckenbach. They don't tell you that the dancehall has open windows or that the strings of lights hanging from the ceiling are on, even during the day. Nobody tells you that the general small is so small, there's hardly room in there to change your mind, that there's an entire wall of t-shirts and that most every trinket reminds you: Everybody's somebody in Luckenbach.
A tour through scenic Luckenbach will take you approximately three whole minutes, and that's not an exaggeration. But if you've heard about it all your life, you're liable to still find it interesting, despite its small scale. If you're like me, you'll peer into the dancehall and imagine legendary musicians on the stage, couples shuffling around the dance floor, music seeping out of the open windows and onto the gravel road. You'll think that people probably pass right by this place all of the time without realizing it. But more than anything, you'll think that for such a small, sleepy town in Texas, it still seems pretty big – full of heart, full of life.

My sister Patience was the first reigning Miss Luckenbach back a long time ago. In fact I think she held the title for several years! We have a picture of her in her beauty contest bathing suit with a banner across her chest...
She was Miss Luckenbach?! SERIOUSLY?!
YES!!! I've got her searching for her photo so you can see her! How funny, huh?
Hilarious!
